Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with music, dance, and heartfelt devotion, but this year’s Visarjan in Pune brought an unusual twist.

As processions moved through Laxmi Road, Tilak Road, and Jangli Maharaj Road, devotees were surprised to see what looked like a shower of currency falling from above. Notes of ₹10, ₹100, ₹200, ₹500, and even U.S. dollars floated down, drawing people to grab them in excitement. Many believed it was a miracle, only to realise later that the money was fake—scattered into the crowd using a “paper blast.”

The spectacle quickly became the talk of the city. Some people laughed it off, calling it a playful moment. “I thought Lord Ganesha himself was blessing us with money,” one devotee joked. Others, however, felt the act was inappropriate.

In Hindu tradition, money is linked with Goddess Lakshmi and holds spiritual value. Even imitation notes carry the image of real currency and are treated with respect. Throwing them around during a religious procession, many argued, undermines that respect and distracts from the spirit of devotion.

Beyond cultural concerns, the move also raised safety and environmental issues. The scramble to collect notes created unnecessary chaos in already crowded streets, sparking fears of accidents. Later, the roads were left littered with piles of fake currency, adding to waste despite mandals’ efforts this year to promote eco-friendly idols and decorations. Environmental activists noted that such stunts go against the festival’s growing message of sustainability.

Ganpati celebrations are meant to unite communities in faith and joy. While creativity and entertainment have their place, devotees reminded that the essence of the festival lies in devotion and respect.
