Families, including women and children, stuck for 90 minutes in Ranthambore forest after canter breakdown; probe ordered.

In a shocking case of negligence at Rajasthan’s Ranthambore National Park, a group of tourists — including women and children were left stranded in a forest zone inhabited by tigers after their safari canter broke down and their guide allegedly fled the scene.

The incident occurred in zone 6 of the park around 6 pm, when the vehicle carrying tourists malfunctioned. According to the visitors, the guide initially claimed he would fetch another canter, but after allegedly misbehaving with them, he never returned.

Videos recorded by tourists showed children crying in fear, using mobile phone lights to cope with the darkness as they waited in the jungle, home to over 60 tigers along with leopards, sloth bears, and marsh crocodiles.

The group remained stranded for nearly 90 minutes, from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, before being rescued.

Confirming the incident, Ranthambore Tiger Reserve’s Field Director and Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Anoop K.R. assured that the safety of tourists remains the park’s top priority. He said strict action will be taken against guides or drivers found violating rules, adding that “such negligence will not be tolerated in the future.”

Spread across 1,411 sq. km, Ranthambore is one of India’s 54 designated tiger reserves. According to park authorities, the tiger population has risen to around 88 as of late 2023.
