The two star batters have struggled to find their form in the current Test series against Australia

India’s seasoned cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are under scrutiny due to their erratic performances in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. Renowned for their significant impact on Indian cricket, both players have faced challenges with their batting, sparking conversations about their prospects in Test cricket.

India’s prospects of reaching the World Test Championship final for the third consecutive year took a significant hit after their defeat to Australia by 184 runs in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday, the 4th test match in the series. In pursuit of a challenging 340-run target, India was bowled out for 155 during the final session of the fifth and last day of the fourth Test.

On Day 5 of the fourth Test match in Melbourne, commentator Mark Nicholas inquired with Shastri on Star Sports about his thoughts on whether this could mark the conclusion of the careers for both Virat and Rohit.

“I think Virat will play for some time. Forget the way he got out, or whatever. I think he’ll play for another three or four years. As far as Rohit is concerned, it’s a call. At the top of the order, you know, just feel the footwork isn’t the same. He’s probably at times, late in meeting the ball so it’s his call at the end of the series,” was Shastri’s reply.

Rohit Sharma’s overly cautious strategy and Virat Kohli’s persistent struggles with deliveries outside the off-stump left India in a precarious position at 33 for 3 at lunch, following Australia’s daunting target of 340 runs on day five of the fourth Test on Monday.

Rohit, scoring 9 runs off 40 balls, put in significant effort during the initial hour until Australian captain Pat Cummins claimed his wicket for the tenth time in Test cricket.

The Indian team’s strategy mirrored its mentality as the slim hope of a win faded during the morning session.

While it was anticipated that Rohit would adopt his usual aggressive style at the top of the order, he instead opted for a cautious approach amid a challenging phase, which ultimately proved ineffective.

Kohli’s performance in the series has been inconsistent, accumulating 167 runs across seven innings with an average of 27.83. His most notable achievement was a solitary century in Perth, which stood out as his best display.
