Pune, August 15, 2025: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will roll out the Road Safety Mitra initiative across 19 districts in Maharashtra starting August 15. The programme aims to engage college students in promoting safe driving practices and providing timely assistance during road emergencies.

The campaign is part of a nationwide volunteer-driven effort covering 100 districts. In Maharashtra, it will be implemented in Pune, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Jalgaon, Satara, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed, Nagpur, Dhule, Yavatmal, Jalna, Amravati, Kolhapur, Nanded, Chandrapur, Buldhana, Sangli, and Mumbai. Volunteers aged 18 to 28, from higher secondary to undergraduate levels, will be trained to understand and promote road safety regulations.

State transport minister Pratap Sarnaik said Road Safety Mitras will be equipped to respond quickly in emergencies, coordinate with local authorities and law enforcement, and work with road safety boards. “Volunteers will be recognised and awarded for their contributions,” he added.
