Mumbai, May 26: After a lacklustre performance at the box office, Salman Khan’s big-budget Eid release Sikandar premiered on Netflix on May 25. However, its digital debut appears to be no more promising than its theatrical run.

Marketed as a high-octane mass entertainer, Sikandar came with massive expectations. Directed by AR Murugadoss and made on a reported budget of Rs 200 crore, the film was expected to dominate the festive weekend. Instead, it struggled to even cross the Rs 100 crore mark in India, underperforming even compared to Salman’s previous flop, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan.

Critics and audiences alike were unimpressed. Reviews cited a dated storyline, uninspired action sequences, and weak writing.

Word-of-mouth further impacted the film’s performance, with show bookings plummeting after the opening weekend. Several cinema halls reportedly cancelled screenings due to poor turnout. Simultaneously, other films like Jaat and Kesari 2 took over the audience’s attention. Piracy also played a role in draining the film’s limited momentum.

Now, with Sikandar streaming on Netflix, the question remains: can the OTT platform salvage its reputation? Early online reactions suggest otherwise. Viewers on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit have criticised Netflix for adding the film to its library. Comments ranged from sarcastic jabs to outright disdain. “Netflix is really picking up every flop under the sun these days,” one user wrote. Another quipped, “A disaster movie ke liye itni hype bana rahe ho Netflix, sharam hai?”

While die-hard Salman Khan fans may still give it a watch, the overall mood online has been dismissive. Many seem more interested in mocking the film than engaging with it sincerely.

With OTT viewers known for their sharp wit and meme culture, Sikandar may face renewed criticism — this time from living rooms rather than cinema seats.
