A debt-ridden farmer was allegedly murdered by his own family for insurance money in Sangli district. Police arrested his wife, Vanita Baburao Patil, her son Tejas Baburao Patil, and his friend Bhimrao Ganpatrao Hulwan on March 1. The trio, residents of Shirdhon in Kavathe Mahankal, allegedly pressured Baburao Patil (56) to die by suicide. When he hesitated, they killed him.

According to the Hindustan Times, The crime took place between 2 am and 3 am on February 10 along the Miraj-Pandharpur highway near Landewadi. Baburao’s body was found near Hotel Arya. His brother, Sagar Patil, rushed him to a government hospital, where police initially registered an accidental death case.

However, inconsistencies in Vanita and Tejas’ statements raised suspicions. “Telephonic data and CCTV footage placed them near the crime scene, contradicting their claim of being in Karad,” a police official said.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime. Baburao was burdened with ₹50 lakh in debt, including a home loan. The family was under pressure from lenders, and when the bank issued an auction notice, Vanita and Tejas plotted to claim his insurance money.

Baburao had four insurance policies, including a ₹1 crore term plan. He initially tried to end his life by stepping onto the highway but backed out. Frustrated, Tejas and Bhimrao followed him in a car. When he hesitated again, they forcibly smashed his head against a road divider and dumped his body to make it look like an accident.

“Though Vanita wasn’t at the crime scene, she was the mastermind,” an official said.

The trio has been booked under Sections 103(1), 61(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
