Pune: Tension continues to rise around Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital following the death of Tanisha Bhise, wife of BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe’s personal assistant Sushant Bhise, during childbirth. The hospital allegedly demanded a ₹10 lakh deposit before admission, prompting the family to shift Tanisha to another hospital, where she gave birth to twin girls but tragically passed away soon after.

The Bhise family has accused the hospital of delay in treatment due to financial demands, claiming her life could have been saved with timely care. In response, demands for action against the hospital administration have intensified.

Amid mounting pressure, the state government has constituted an inquiry committee. Meanwhile, Dr. Sushrut Ghaisas—who reportedly asked for the ₹10 lakh deposit—has resigned from his honorary obstetrics post at the hospital. Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department has now issued notices to 850 hospitals across the city, reminding them not to demand deposits in emergency cases and to prioritize patient care.

In the wake of protests led by various social organizations outside Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune Police have imposed restrictions in the vicinity to maintain order. According to the official order, gatherings of more than two people are prohibited within 100 meters of the hospital from April 9 to April 19, 2025. The order excludes hospital staff, patients, ambulance drivers, and security personnel.

Additionally, the use of loudspeakers, posting inflammatory content, or putting up printed material within the hospital premises is strictly forbidden during this period.

The incident has sparked a wider conversation on the ethics of demanding upfront payments in life-threatening emergencies, especially in maternity cases.
