India’s top taxpaying celebrity for the financial year 2023-24 isn’t a cricketer or a new face in Bollywood but an industry stalwart. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan emerged as the leading taxpayer, shelling out a staggering ₹92 crore in taxes, as per Fortune India’s rankings.

Shah Rukh Khan Leads the Pack

The financial year 2023-24 was nothing short of spectacular for Shah Rukh Khan, with three major releases contributing to his resurgence as the king of Bollywood. His films collectively grossed over ₹2600 crore at the global box office. “Pathaan” led the charge with ₹1000 crore, followed by “Jawan” with ₹1150 crore, and “Dunki”, which added ₹400 crore to his tally. These successes catapulted him back to the top as India’s highest-paid actor after nearly a decade.

How Other Celebrities Fared

Tamil superstar Vijay, known to fans as Thalapathy, ranked second on the list, paying ₹80 crore in taxes. His blockbuster “The Greatest of All Time” earned over ₹600 crore globally, with the actor reportedly taking home ₹200 crore in remuneration. Other high-profile taxpayers included Salman Khan (₹75 crore), Amitabh Bachchan (₹71 crore), and cricketer Virat Kohli (₹66 crore). Kareena Kapoor led the female celebrities, paying ₹20 crore and narrowly missing the top 10.

Both Shah Rukh Khan and Vijay demonstrated the earning potential of Indian cinema when paired with massive hits and global fan bases. The figures, calculated using advance tax payments, highlight their significant contributions not just to cinema but also to the nation’s economy.
