Show cause notice issued to Air India and SpiceJet for failing to roster qualified pilots in Delhi during heavy fog

Air India and SpiceJet received show-cause notices from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on January 4 for ‘rostering non-CAT III compliant pilots’ during Delhi’s foggy season. This action led to additional flight diversions from the nation’s capital.
The aviation regulatory stated that on December 24–25 and December 27–28, low visibility caused more than 50 flights headed for Delhi airport to be diverted. This led to the issuance of the notice.
The first few days of the fog season each year are a little difficult because CAT III compliant pilots are busy in other sectors. CAT III is an instrument landing system (ILS) that enables aircraft to land in low visibility situations where the visibility is 50m, such as during rains, dense fog, or in snow.
There is currently only one CAT III compliant runway at Delhi Airport. According to officials, between December 24–25 and December 27–28 at midnight, 58 flights headed for IGIA were rerouted.
In the meantime, a number of flights headed for Delhi had to be rerouted because there weren’t enough qualified pilots to land during the peak fog season. A data indicated that airlines not rostering pilots who are trained to land in extremely poor visibility at airports was the reason behind 50 of the 58 flights that were diverted between December 25 and midnight.
