New Delhi, April 3, 2025: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is set to make history as India’s first astronaut to fly to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4). Scheduled for May 2025, this mission marks a significant step for India’s space ambitions and strengthens global collaborations in space exploration.

A Historic Milestone for India in Space

Shukla, a seasoned Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, will serve as the mission pilot aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. His participation in Ax-4 not only paves the way for private astronaut missions but also aligns with India’s Gaganyaan program, which aims to send indigenous astronauts into space.

The Ax-4 crew will be led by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, alongside mission specialists Sawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. During their 14-day stay on the ISS, the team will conduct scientific research, educational programs, and commercial activities in microgravity.

Showcasing India’s Heritage in Space

In addition to his scientific objectives, Shukla will promote India’s rich cultural heritage by carrying artifacts from across the country and even practicing yoga in space. His journey follows in the footsteps of Rakesh Sharma, India’s first astronaut who flew aboard Soyuz T-11 in 1984.

NASA, ISRO, and Axiom Space Collaboration

The mission underscores growing global partnerships, with NASA, ISRO, and Axiom Space working together to expand private astronaut access to low Earth orbit (LEO). This collaboration is expected to pave the way for sustainable space exploration and future commercial missions.

Shukla expressed his pride in representing India’s space aspirations, stating, “Even as an individual traveling to space, this is the journey of 1.4 billion people.”

With the Ax-4 launch approaching, excitement continues to build as India takes a bold step toward a new era of human spaceflight.
