A new study has revealed that excessive smartphone use may impact brain activity similar to addiction. Published in ‘Computers in Human Behavior’, the study suggests that staying away from smartphones for 72 hours leads to changes in brain regions linked to dopamine and serotonin—neurotransmitters that control mood and addiction.  

Researchers studied 25 young adults aged 18 to 30, all regular smartphone users. Before the study, participants underwent physical and mental health assessments to ensure their well-being. They also answered two sets of questions related to their mood and smartphone habits.  

For 72 hours, these individuals were kept away from their phones while continuing their daily routines. They spent time talking to family but engaged in no other major activities.

During this period, their psychological responses were recorded, and brain activity was monitored using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI).

The fMRI scans showed significant changes in brain regions associated with addiction. The participants’ brains exhibited patterns similar to those observed in people withdrawing from addictive substances. The researchers found that limiting smartphone usage directly affected dopamine and serotonin levels, indicating that excessive phone use could be a form of dependency.  

Despite increasing concerns about smartphone addiction, research in this area remains limited. This study highlights the need for better habits and conscious efforts to reduce smartphone use. It also provides crucial insights into how digital dependency may affect mental health.  

As smartphone use continues to rise, understanding its impact on the brain is essential for developing healthier digital habits.
