Actor Sonu Sood, widely admired for his humanitarian efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic, recently disclosed that he was offered prestigious political positions, including Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and a Rajya Sabha seat. However, he turned down all these opportunities.

In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Mr. Sood revealed, “I was offered the position of Chief Minister. When I declined, they suggested becoming Deputy Chief Minister. These were influential people in the country who also offered me a Rajya Sabha seat, assuring me that I wouldn’t need to contest elections to secure it.”

Reflecting on these offers, he added, “It’s flattering when such powerful individuals want to support you in making a difference. However, I chose to stay away from politics to retain my freedom.”

Explaining his decision, the actor said, “People usually enter politics for power or wealth. I’m not interested in either. Helping people is my priority, and I’m already doing that independently. Joining politics might make me accountable to others, and that thought unsettles me. I fear losing the freedom I currently enjoy.”

Elaborating further, Mr. Sood compared rising popularity to high altitudes, saying, “At higher altitudes, oxygen levels drop. It’s not just about rising, but also about sustaining oneself up there.”

He also shared that many had enticed him with perks such as a government-stamped letterhead, a luxurious house in Delhi, and enhanced security. While acknowledging the appeal, he clarified, “I’m not ready right now. Maybe in the future, my perspective might change. Never say never. For now, the actor and director in me are still active. I respect politicians and have friends in politics doing commendable work.”

Interestingly, Mr. Sood’s sister, Malvika Sood, ventured into politics in 2022, joining the Congress party and contesting the Moga assembly seat in Punjab. However, she was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party’s Amandeep Kaur Arora.
