State Election Commissioner Directs Preliminary Inspection and Readiness of EVMs for Upcoming Municipal Elections

Maharashtra State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare has instructed officials to conduct a thorough preliminary inspection of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and ensure they are fully prepared for use in the upcoming municipal corporation elections.

Chairing a virtual meeting with Divisional Commissioners and Municipal Commissioners to review preparatory measures for the elections, Waghmare emphasized the need for meticulous planning and coordination to avoid last-minute hurdles. State Election Commission Secretary Suresh Kakani and other senior officials were also present at the session.

Waghmare highlighted that early vigilance is crucial for the smooth conduct of elections across all 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. “Authorities must assess the availability of voters, polling stations, electronic voting machines, and manpower at their respective levels. Once EVMs are inspected, we can estimate the required numbers and address gaps in advance,” he said.

He further advised Divisional Commissioners to act as coordinators and hold regular review meetings with Municipal Commissioners to track readiness. “With proper planning and coordination among all stakeholders, we can ensure these elections are held in a free, fair, and transparent manner,” Waghmare added.

Echoing similar views, Secretary Suresh Kakani said that determining the exact number of polling stations based on voter strength will simplify further planning. “Once the polling station requirements are finalised, it will be easier to plan for EVM allocation and manpower deployment. Divisional Commissioners can also mobilize additional manpower from neighboring districts if required,” he stated.

Kakani directed officials to maintain comprehensive and up-to-date information about all aspects of preparedness and present the same during periodic reviews.
