State Government Plans Cancer Hospital in Pune to Meet Rising Patient Demand
PUNE: The Maharashtra government is planning to establish a dedicated cancer hospital in Pune, considering the increasing number of cancer patients in the region. Minister of State for Medical Education Madhuri Misal made the announcement in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
To facilitate this initiative, a request for land has been made to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC). Sassoon Hospital has been identified as a suitable location for the proposed facility, Misal stated.
She further revealed that while 2,350 posts have been approved for Sassoon Sarvoopchar Government Hospital, 769 positions remain vacant, including 156 nursing roles and 50% of the class four posts. The recruitment process, managed by TCS under the District Collector’s supervision, is expected to commence within the next eight days. Immediate appointments for 44 class one and 110 class two posts are also on the agenda.

In response to concerns raised by Cantonment MLAs Sunil Kamble, Siddharth Shirole, Hemant Rasane, Sharad Sonawane, Bhimrao Tapkir, and Vikram Pachpute during the budget session, Misal emphasized that Sassoon Hospital is the primary healthcare facility for western Maharashtra, serving patients from Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and beyond. The hospital handles approximately 5.5 lakh outpatients annually, with around 60,000 admissions from Pune city alone, leading to increased pressure on resources.
Addressing complaints about medicine shortages, Misal informed that medicines worth ₹12.94 crore have been recently procured, alongside new medical equipment. Additionally, a request has been submitted to the District Planning Committee for further procurement to meet rising healthcare demands.
