State Government Unveils Draft Policy for E-Bike Taxis; Feedback Invited Until June 5
Pune, June 3 – The journey of an ‘e-bike taxi’ will be limited to a 15-kilometre radius. This service will only be available through app-based bookings and cannot be availed by hailing on the roadside. Additionally, the maximum speed for e-bike taxis will be capped at 60 km/h.
For the safety of women passengers, there will be an option to choose a female driver. For the first time, the Maharashtra government has released a clear set of regulations for launching the e-bike taxi service, marking significant progress in its implementation. These rules will apply to both operators and drivers, with various measures incorporated for passenger safety.
The state government has recently issued the draft of the ‘Maharashtra Bike Taxi Regulations – 2025’ to officially launch the e-bike taxi service. The initiative aims to promote eco-friendly and safe transport options while also creating employment opportunities for unemployed youth. Public objections and suggestions regarding the draft can be submitted until June 5, 2025.
Operator Requirements:
Minimum 50 electric two-wheelers needed.
₹5 lakh security deposit and ₹1 lakh application fee required for licensing.
License valid for 5 years.
Vehicle and Driver Guidelines:
Vehicles must be yellow and labeled ‘Bike Taxi’.
GPS tracking mandatory in all vehicles.
Driver’s age must be between 20 and 50 years with mandatory police verification.
Drivers should behave courteously and drive safely.
Drivers can work up to 8 hours a day.
Passenger Safety Measures:
Helmets mandatory for all passengers. A divider between driver and passenger is required.
Option to select female drivers for women passengers.
Service Limitations:
Bookings only via the app; hailing on the street is not allowed.
Maximum speed limit of 60 km/h.
Services will be suspended during heavy rain or stormy weather.
Passengers must not smoke, consume alcohol, or damage the vehicle.
