Student Brutally Attacked in Navi Mumbai Over Marathi Language Dispute, FIR Lodged Against Four
20-year-old beaten with hockey stick, kicks and punches after refusing to speak Marathi; accused on the run
In a shocking incident that has stirred outrage in Navi Mumbai, a 20-year-old student was brutally beaten with a hockey stick and assaulted with punches and kicks over a dispute related to the Marathi language. The incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Tuesday night outside a college in the Vashi area.
According to police, the student, a resident of Pavan village in Airoli, was targeted after an argument broke out when he reportedly refused to speak in Marathi. The dispute quickly escalated into violence. One of the accused, Faizan Naik, allegedly objected to the student speaking in another language, following which he and three others attacked the victim.
“The main accused struck the student on the head with a hockey stick, resulting in severe injuries,” an officer from Vashi police station said. “The other accused joined in and began beating the victim with kicks and punches. He was also threatened with dire consequences if he approached the police.”
Eyewitnesses said the student collapsed on the ground, soaked in blood. Locals rushed him to the hospital and informed the police. The student’s condition is reported to be critical, though stable.
Following the incident, the police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against four individuals under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- Section 118(1): Voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means
- Section 352: Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace
- Sections 351(2) and 351(3): Criminal intimidation
- Section 3(5): Common intention
Police officials stated that they are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. “A medical examination has been conducted and the victim’s statement has been recorded. The accused will be arrested soon and strict action will be taken,” the officer assured.
The incident has reignited concerns over growing linguistic intolerance and rising cases of violence linked to identity disputes in the state.
