Pune | July 30, 2025 — Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) leader and Baramati MP Supriya Sule has demanded a thorough investigation and strict punishment after the family of Kargil war veteran Hakimuddin Shaikh was allegedly harassed and asked to prove their citizenship by Pune Police and unidentified individuals.

The incident reportedly took place late at night on July 26, when several men stormed the Shaikh family’s residence in the Chandannagar area and took the male members to the police station, where they were held until 3 am. The family was told to submit documents verifying their citizenship, failing which they would be labeled as illegal immigrants or Rohingyas.

Expressing outrage, Sule posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Maharashtra has always honoured its soldiers, but it is shameful that even Kargil war heroes now face such humiliation. This is a serious failure of the Home Department.”

Hakimuddin Shaikh, a retired Naik Havildar from the Indian Army’s 269 Engineer Regiment, had lived in Pune until 2013 before returning to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh. His extended family — including brothers, nephews, and their spouses — continues to reside in Pune.

“The Shaikh family has served the nation with pride. This treatment is an insult not only to them but to the Indian Army itself,” Sule added, demanding accountability from the state government.

Responding to the controversy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Somay Munde said the action was based on intelligence inputs about suspected Bangladeshi nationals in the area. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed that an investigation is underway and assured action if police misconduct is established.
