Sweden’s Newly Appointed Health Minister Elisabet Lann Collapses During First Press Conference
Sweden’s newly appointed health minister, Elisabet Lann, fainted during a live press briefing just hours after stepping into her new role. The unexpected incident occurred on Tuesday as she appeared alongside Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and other top officials in Stockholm.
Video footage of the event, which has since gone viral on social media, shows Lann speaking at the podium before suddenly losing her balance and collapsing to the floor. She appeared to faint without warning, falling forward and striking a transparent lectern as stunned reporters and officials looked on.
Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch was seen immediately rushing to Lann’s side, helping to roll her over and calling for assistance. Other politicians and journalists quickly gathered around to offer aid. Lann was briefly escorted out of the room by medical personnel and support staff.
A short while later, Lann returned to address the media, offering a calm explanation for the alarming scene. “This was not exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop,” she said, attributing the collapse to hypoglycaemia—a sudden drop in blood sugar levels.

According to medical experts, hypoglycaemia occurs when blood glucose levels fall below the normal range. While it is most commonly associated with people living with diabetes, non-diabetics can also experience episodes under certain conditions such as skipping meals, intense physical exertion, or other underlying health issues. Symptoms can come on quickly and may include shakiness, dizziness, fatigue, sweating, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. In more serious cases, fainting, seizures, and even loss of consciousness may occur.
Immediate treatment for hypoglycaemia typically involves consuming fast-acting carbohydrates or sugary drinks to quickly raise blood glucose levels. If left untreated, severe cases can become life-threatening and require emergency medical intervention.
Lann’s collapse came just hours after she was appointed to the position, following the sudden resignation of her predecessor. While she appeared stable and composed after the incident, no official update has been given regarding any possible injuries sustained during the fall.
