In a distressing incident, a train carrying several devotees to the Mahakumbh was targeted by stone pelters, leaving several window panes shattered. Passengers onboard captured the aftermath, showcasing the damage and raising concerns about safety during one of India’s largest religious gatherings.
A video posted on social media shows a passenger pointing out the damaged window caused by stone throwing. The passenger reported that an unidentified individual hurled stones at the Tapti Ganga Express, which was traveling from Surat to Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in considerable damage to the window.
An Instagram account shared the video with the caption: “Passengers share video after stone was thrown on train going to Mahakumbh from Surat.” In the footage, a man mentions that shortly after the journey began, some troublemakers threw a stone. The passenger also urged the Railway Minister to enhance security, explaining that he was attending the religious event with his family.
As per reports, the incident took place in the B6 coach of the train, which was carrying 13 devotees, including women and children.
“Quick response”
Swapnil Neela, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, mentioned that the authorities acted swiftly. “A stone was thrown at this train coming from Surat Udhna, near Jalgaon. The Railway Protection Force took immediate action, deploying four teams to the train. A complaint has also been filed,” the official said.
“As the train left Jalgaon Railway station, within just five minutes, someone threw a stone at berth number 39 in the B/6 coach. The passengers were startled and quickly notified the Ticket Checker (TC) Sohan Lal,” explained Jalgaon RPF police inspector D H Patil.
As per the RPF, after the complaint was made, Lal looked into the matter and assured the passengers that they would get all the help they needed. The next station after the incident was Bhusaval station, where RPF officials inspected the entire coach and talked to both the passengers and the train conductor.
The Tapti Ganga Express travels between Surat in Gujarat and Chhapra Junction in Bihar, crossing five states and making several stops in Uttar Pradesh.
