TCS employee plans to drive autorickshaw after 3 years without salary hike, goes viral on Reddit
Mumbai: In a post that quickly went viral on Reddit and was widely shared on social media, an unverified user from Thane opened up about his struggles with salary stagnation. The working professional, employed in a non-technical role at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), revealed that he hadn’t received a salary hike in three years and was now exploring alternate ways to support himself financially.
The user wrote that despite trying to switch jobs, his efforts had failed due to a lack of job openings. “I had planned to buy a bike this year, but now I’m thinking of investing in an autorickshaw instead. I’ll drive it before and after office hours and rent it out when I’m not using it,” he wrote. He also mentioned that his budget for this plan was limited to ₹80,000.
The post triggered an outpouring of support and suggestions from fellow Reddit users. Some appreciated his hustle, and others offered practical advice on how to go about this new venture.

One user laid out a full strategy to help him maximize profits. “An average rickshaw costs around 2–4 lacs; try buying a second-hand rickshaw. You can drive it in the early morning, and around 8 am let a rickshaw driver drive it. Charge him 10k for the whole month (don’t know the real rental value, just a guess). Let him drive it till 12 am; your profit would be around 13k,” they explained.
The same user added that he could earn more by transporting schoolchildren in the mornings. “In the morning you can take school kids, charge them a monthly ₹1,000, take 6–7 kids in the auto, and make the rent driver take them back home in the afternoon. And give him a 50% cut. Your total profit now will be around 16–17k, give or take.”
Other users suggested he look into food delivery jobs or platforms like Rapido, which require a bike but no permit. One shared their personal story: “I worked 4–5 hours and made ₹1,000. Met a lot of interesting people, VPs, and directors; better networking than LinkedIn.”
However, some offered caution. One user wrote, “Apart from rickshaw, fuel, and permits, keep money aside for bribes. Nothing gets done here without it.”
The viral post has sparked larger conversations about stagnant wages, side hustles, and the rising cost of living.
