Tesla Makes Mumbai Debut with First Showroom at BKC, Focus on Imported EVs
Mumbai, July 15, 2025: Global electric vehicle giant Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) today.
The highly anticipated debut comes after Tesla’s India-focused X (formerly Twitter) account teased the launch last week with a cryptic “Coming soon” post. The Mumbai showroom will showcase Tesla’s premium EV lineup, but for now, the company plans to sell imported vehicles rather than manufacture locally.
Union Minister for Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy recently confirmed that Tesla has no immediate plans to set up production in India. “They want to sell their cars in India. There’s no further development,” he said in June.
Tesla’s India entry aligns with the country’s new EV policy, which offers reduced import duties and incentives to attract global electric carmakers. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk discussed potential collaboration in technology and innovation during a call, fueling speculation about the company’s plans for India.
While the company has kept details of its India strategy under wraps, it has begun hiring locally, signaling its intent to establish a foothold in one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets. The Mumbai showroom is expected to serve as a testing ground for gauging demand for Tesla’s premium electric vehicles in India.
