Tesla’s much-anticipated entry into the Indian automotive market appears to be gaining traction, as a heavily camouflaged Tesla Model Y was recently spotted testing on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
The test mule, bearing a red temporary registration plate and configured in right-hand drive, is believed to be the updated 2025 Model Y. Industry sources suggest this version boasts a Cybertruck-inspired design, refreshed interiors, and advanced tech features. While Tesla has yet to make an official announcement, the recent developments hint at an accelerated rollout of the Model Y in India.
Global Specs, India-Ready Adaptations
Internationally, the Model Y is offered in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive variants, with a maximum claimed range of 550 km on a single charge. It also features a 75kWh battery, fast-charging capability up to 250 kW, and a top-tier autonomous driving system.
Design-wise, the Model Y sports a sleek, curvy silhouette, connected LED DRLs, and staggered alloy wheels—19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear. With a length of 4,790 mm and ground clearance adapted for rugged terrains, the Model Y could be well-suited to Indian road conditions.

Feature-Packed Interior
The vehicle is expected to offer a 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, and Tesla’s signature autonomous driving features. However, final specifications for the India-specific variant are yet to be confirmed.
Infrastructure Plans Underway
Tesla has reportedly secured retail space for showrooms in two major Indian cities—Delhi’s Aerocity and Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)—each spanning roughly 5,000 square feet. These locations are expected to serve as key touchpoints for Tesla’s India operations.
Government Dialogue Fuels Speculation
The sighting comes on the heels of a high-profile meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The discussions reportedly focused on technological collaboration and innovation, further strengthening speculation about Tesla’s impending launch in India.
Tesla has also submitted new homologation filings for both the Model 3 and Model Y, a strong indicator that the automaker is preparing for market entry.
