That daily can of soda may be costing more than just calories—it could be cutting years off your life. A recent study from the University of Michigan has found that consuming a single can of soda could reduce a person’s lifespan by approximately 12 minutes. Even more concerning, processed foods such as hot dogs and corned beef could shorten life expectancy by 36 and 71 minutes per serving, respectively, raising fresh concerns about dietary habits and long-term health risks.

Alarming Findings on Soda and Processed Foods

The study analyzed 5,853 common foods in the American diet, calculating their impact on longevity based on their nutritional composition and associated health risks. The results were striking: each serving of soda shortens life expectancy by 12 minutes. Processed foods fared even worse—hot dogs were found to reduce lifespan by 36 minutes per serving, while corned beef dishes could cost up to 71 minutes. Other popular items, such as bacon and chicken wings, were also linked to reductions of six and three minutes, respectively.

The findings highlight the potential dangers of excessive processed food consumption, particularly in the U.S., where sugary drinks remain a staple. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 63% of American adults consume soda, sweetened coffee, or energy drinks at least once daily, while 45% of high school students do the same. This widespread habit has long been associated with obesity and chronic health conditions, but the study suggests the damage may be more immediate than previously thought.

Healthier Choices Could Extend Lifespan

While some foods may reduce life expectancy, the study also identified several that could have the opposite effect. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich, for example, was found to add 33 minutes to a person’s life, while sardines in tomato sauce could extend it by 82 minutes. Other beneficial choices include nuts, which can add 26 minutes, and bananas, which contribute an additional 14 minutes.

Dr. Olivier Jolliet, the lead researcher, emphasized that significant health benefits can be achieved without drastic dietary overhauls. “Simply swapping 10% of daily calories from processed meats to fruits, vegetables, and legumes could add 48 minutes to your life each day,” Jolliet stated.

The study’s findings underscore the urgent need for dietary changes to improve both individual health and broader public health outcomes. As awareness grows about the direct impact of food choices on longevity, experts hope that consumers will reconsider their daily habits and opt for healthier alternatives.
