Solapur, 26 May 2025: A dramatic rescue operation unfolded on Monday morning after three priests were stranded at the Mahadev Temple located on the Bhima riverbed near Gursale village, following a sudden surge in water levels.

The priests — identified as Subhash Dhavan, Vitthal Lohkare, and Jadhav Maharaj — had arrived at the temple early in the morning to perform daily rituals. However, shortly after their arrival, the water level in the Bhima River began rising rapidly, cutting off the access route and leaving them trapped on the temple premises.

Upon realizing their situation, the priests contacted nearby villagers for help. The villagers promptly alerted the local administration, which in turn dispatched a disaster management team to the site. Rescue personnel arrived swiftly and launched an operation to bring the priests to safety.

Fortunately, the priests are unharmed and have been moved to a safe location outside the temple area. Officials confirmed that while the temple itself is built on slightly elevated terrain and remains unaffected by the floodwater, the surrounding region has been completely submerged, making movement impossible without external assistance.

The cause of the sudden rise in the river’s water level is currently under review, though heavy rainfall upstream is suspected to be a contributing factor. The district administration has urged people living in low-lying areas near the river to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel.

The incident has highlighted the urgent need for improved monitoring systems and preemptive warning mechanisms, especially for temples and other frequently visited locations near water bodies during the monsoon and pre-monsoon periods.
