Pune: In a dramatic turn of events early Saturday morning, the Pimpri Chinchwad police successfully thwarted a gang of thieves who had stolen ₹10.52 lakh in cash from a Hitachi ATM. The incident unfolded around midnight, when a group of six individuals used a gas cutter and cylinder to break into the ATM located at Bidarwadi Phata.

According to police reports, the thieves fled the scene in a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) after executing their heist. Quick action by Police Constable Santosh Holkar, who received timely information about the incident, was crucial in mobilizing the police response. He promptly alerted his colleagues at the Mhalunge MIDC police station, who were on night patrol.

Under the guidance of Senior Police Inspector Nitin Gite, Constables Yuvraj Birajdar and Amol Mate quickly rushed to the ATM site, where they learned that the culprits had escaped in an SUV. The police immediately initiated a chase, attempting to intercept the fleeing vehicle. However, the suspects allegedly rammed their SUV into the police vehicle, allowing them to evade capture momentarily.

The pursuit continued as police officers followed the SUV toward Waghjai Phata. A police team, led by Sub Inspectors Jitendra Pardeshi and Datta Jadhav, set up a blockade to stop the fleeing vehicle. In a surprising move, the accused changed their route and made their way toward Chakan.

During the chase, Police Constables Ashok Gabhale and Ganesh Gaikwad, who were also on patrol, devised a plan to intercept the SUV by positioning a container truck in the middle of the road at Ambethan junction in Chakan. Despite their efforts, the thieves managed to alter their course, veering into a narrow lane in Ambethan.

As the chase continued, the suspects found themselves trapped in the narrow lane, where their SUV could no longer proceed. Taking advantage of the darkness, the gang abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot, attempting to escape the police dragnet.

Upon reaching the abandoned SUV, police seized the stolen cash, the vehicle, and various other items left behind by the thieves. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Shivaji Pawar confirmed that a search operation is underway to identify and apprehend the accused. An FIR has been registered at the Chakan police station, and authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward.

This incident serves as a reminder of the quick response and coordination among local law enforcement in addressing criminal activities, showcasing their commitment to keeping the community safe.
