Tired of Loan Spam Calls? New TRAI-RBI Rule Bans Unsolicited Bank Calls
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have started a new plan to reduce spam calls about loans and credit cards. These unwanted calls are a big problem for mobile users and often lead to fraud. Now, banks and companies will need to ask customers for clear permission before calling or sending promotional messages.
TRAI and RBI have made a new system that will use digital consent. This means banks or any company must ask customers for their approval in a digital way before contacting them for ads or offers. This system will store and check the permission before sending any message or making a call.
The new plan will begin with the banking sector. This is because many fraud calls are related to loans and credit cards. The Ministry of Communications said the pilot project will run first in this area, where the risk is high. This trial will help test how the system works in real time. Later, the same method can be used for insurance, online shopping, and travel services.
On June 13, TRAI told all telecom service providers and selected banks to join this pilot. These groups will work together to create a setup where no business can call or message without getting permission. Many companies used to say they had consent, but there was no safe way to prove it. This new system will store the customer’s approval and check it before any call or message goes out.
How the New System Will Work
In the new plan, a company must ask for permission digitally before sending ads. This consent will be saved in a system managed by telecom operators. Before sending any message or call, the system will check if the consent is valid. Only if the customer agreed, the call or message will be allowed.
TRAI also said that all businesses sending promotional messages must register and follow rules. This will make sure the system works smoothly and fairly.
Previous Steps Taken by TRAI
TRAI had earlier allowed people to report spam even if they were not on the Do Not Disturb (DND) list. They also acted against telemarketers who used wrong or old phone numbers to make spam calls. This new system will now offer more safety and more control to users.
What It Means for Customers
Now, banks must get digital permission before sending any promotional SMS or call. Customers can also check, change, or cancel their permissions anytime using SMS, websites, or apps.
Every time someone gives permission, they will get a message confirming it. The message will also have an option to opt-out, giving full control to the user.
