Tomato Prices Likely to Rise in Pune as Monsoon Hits Quality and Supply
Pune, June 18 – Tomato prices in Pune are set to rise significantly over the next 10 days, driven by unpredictable monsoon weather that’s affecting crop quality and supply dynamics. Even though daily arrivals from key farming regions remain stable at around 14,000 crates, prices are climbing due to poor-quality produce and growing demand from outside Maharashtra.
Currently, wholesale tomato crates (20kg) are priced between ₹450 and ₹2,500, and experts expect them to touch ₹1,000 per crate soon. In retail markets, consumers are already paying ₹40–₹50 per kg, with rates likely to rise to ₹60–₹70 in the coming days. Similar spikes were seen during last year’s monsoon, when prices had soared to ₹80–₹90 per kg.
Traders report that while rainfall has subsided recently, paving the way for better-quality produce, it may not necessarily translate to relief for buyers. Premium-grade tomatoes typically fetch higher prices, and Maharashtra’s dominant role in national supply means local availability remains under strain.
Consumers are also facing quality issues. Many report receiving soft, bruised, or spoiled tomatoes—especially from delivery apps—despite paying high prices, often leading to product returns or dissatisfaction.
On the production side, farmers are grappling with major crop losses due to excessive rain in May, which wiped out nearly 70% of the tomato yield in some regions. This early-season damage has added pressure to current market prices.
According to traders, much of the tomato stock arriving now is undersized or marred by black spots, affecting shelf life and saleability. While improved supply is expected if the weather holds, future prices will hinge heavily on upcoming rainfall patterns.
As of now, wholesale rates range between ₹20 and ₹25 per kg. However, any further weather-related disruption could lead to tighter supply and further price escalation in both wholesale and retail markets.
