Trying to Find Love: Man Loses ₹6.3 Crore in Dating App Investment Scam

Daljit Singh, a Noida resident, lost his entire life savings of Rs 6.3 crore after being tricked by a woman he met on a dating app. The woman, who identified herself as Anita, allegedly convinced Singh to invest in certain companies, promising huge profits.
Singh, a divorcee, joined a dating app last year in search of a fresh start. He matched with Anita, who claimed to be from Hyderabad. Their conversations started casually but quickly grew deeper as they developed a close friendship. Over time, Singh began to trust Anita, who shared information on earning significant profits through online trading and recommended three companies for investment.
Initially, Singh invested Rs 3.2 lakh in one of the websites, and within hours, he saw a profit of Rs 24,000. After transferring Rs 8,000 from the profit to his bank account without any issues, Singh became even more convinced that Anita was genuinely looking out for his best interests.
Encouraged by the success, Singh transferred his entire life savings of approximately Rs 4.5 crore into the investments. Following Anita’s advice, he also took out a loan of Rs 2 crore and invested that amount as well. In total, he transferred Rs 6.5 crore across 25 bank accounts through 30 separate transactions.
The situation took a turn when Singh tried to withdraw his earnings but was told he needed to transfer 30 percent of his invested amount before he could access the funds. When he refused, Anita suddenly stopped responding, and two of the three websites she had recommended were no longer operational. Suspicious of the situation, Singh filed a complaint at the Cyber Police Station in Noida Sector-36.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that Anita’s dating app profile was fake. The police are now working to trace the accounts where Singh’s money was transferred.
