Two More Suspected GBS Deaths in Pune; Fatalities Rise to 11
Pune: The number of suspected deaths linked to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Pune has risen to 11, with two more fatalities reported on Wednesday. According to the Pune district health department, four of these deaths have been confirmed as resulting from the rare neurological disorder.
In one case, a 26-year-old teacher from Nanded City succumbed to severe GBS, septic shock, and multiple organ failure on Tuesday. Officials stated that she first exhibited symptoms, including diarrhea, on January 15. By January 22, she experienced difficulty swallowing liquids and weakness in her legs. She was admitted to Sahyadri Multispeciality Hospital, where she received intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy.
On January 25, her condition worsened, and she was shifted to Kashibai Navale Medical College and General Hospital in Narhe, Pune. She required mechanical ventilation and a tracheostomy tube but eventually succumbed to the illness.
In another suspected GBS case, a 37-year-old man from Daund died on Monday. He suffered from acute flaccid quadriplegia, acute respiratory failure, and a lower respiratory tract infection, which officials believe were linked to GBS.
He was initially treated at Kolhe Hospital in Daund before being admitted to Sassoon General Hospital on February 10. He received IVIG treatment from February 11 to 13, but his condition deteriorated. Doctors diagnosed him with GBS on February 13, noting that he had lost neck support and required mechanical ventilation. Despite medical efforts, he passed away a few days later.
Maharashtra has reported a total of 211 suspected GBS cases, with 183 confirmed. Of these, 144 patients have been discharged, while 36 remain in intensive care units and 16 are on ventilators.
