Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu is facing strong public criticism for sharing an edited video of his visit to the site of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 241 lives on June 12, 2025.

The video, posted on social media platform X, featured slow-motion footage and melancholic background music—an approach typically seen in film trailers or social media reels. Many called the video a tone-deaf attempt at self-promotion during a moment of national grief.

The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, crashing into the Meghani area near a medical college. Only one passenger, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh—a British national of Indian origin—survived the crash. Among the deceased was BJP leader and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, which further intensified the tragedy’s emotional weight.

Naidu’s video, stylised with cinematic edits, drew widespread criticism across social media. Users labeled it a “PR stunt” and accused the minister of using a disaster for political optics. Prominent voices including journalist Sumanth Raman condemned the video, calling it “insensitive.” Others suggested that such posts reflect a growing trend where political communication is increasingly driven by professional PR strategies, even during national crises.

Criticism grew stronger when users noticed that comments had been disabled on the minister’s post—interpreted by many as a silent admission of guilt or embarrassment.

The incident has also drawn comparisons to past actions by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who was similarly criticised for sharing stylized videos in the aftermath of tragic events. Observers now point to a concerning trend among some politicians where carefully curated content appears to take precedence over genuine empathy and accountability.

In a time when the nation mourns a devastating loss, many believe that sensitivity and dignity must be prioritized over digital optics.
