Veer Bal Diwas 2024: Key Facts on the Date, History, Significance, and Observances
The inception of Veer Bal Diwas is rooted in the touching narrative of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s four sons.
India, a nation rich in cultural and historical heritage, commemorates Veer Bal Diwas annually on December 26 to pay tribute to the extraordinary sacrifices made by the Sahibzadas, the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
This national observance, established by the Government of India in 2022, honors the courage, dedication, and selflessness of these young martyrs who remained steadfast in their beliefs in the face of oppression.
Each demonstrated remarkable bravery and commitment to uphold Sikh values and protect those who are marginalized.
The two elder sons, Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh, heroically sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Chamkaur in December 1705.
Their younger siblings, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, were taken captive and faced severe pressure from the Mughal forces.
Despite being only 9 and 6 years old, the young Sahibzadas steadfastly declined to renounce their faith, choosing martyrdom as they were entombed alive within a wall.
Veer Bal Diwas is celebrated annually with a designated theme that embodies its lasting significance. These themes often emphasize courage, solidarity, and the dedication to protecting humanity. On this day, various activities such as educational initiatives, storytelling sessions, and art displays are organized in schools and communities, highlighting the values championed by the Sahibzadas.
The day is commemorated nationwide with a variety of activities, such as seminars, discussions, and exhibitions that highlight the stories of the Sahibzadas’ sacrifice. Communities participate in prayer gatherings and kirtans, focusing on spiritual devotion and moral values.
Educational institutions host storytelling sessions, essay contests, and creative initiatives, providing young students the opportunity to embrace the ideals of courage, sacrifice, and compassion.
