Veg Meal Now Capped at ₹70 at Stations and ₹80 Onboard Trains: Railways Clarifies Menu Rates
Ministry of Railways urges passengers not to pay extra; curd, pickle, and hygienic cutlery must be included
In a move to curb overcharging and ensure price transparency, the Ministry of Railways has officially announced the standardised pricing of Veg Biryani for train passengers. The meal will now cost ₹70 at railway stations and ₹80 when served onboard trains. This announcement was made through the Ministry’s official handle on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

Each Veg Biryani box, weighing 350 grams, will come with curd, pickle, a tissue paper, a biodegradable spoon, and hand sanitizer — all included in the price. The aim is to enhance the passenger experience and ensure that travellers are not misled or overcharged by unauthorized vendors.
Strict Warning Against Overcharging
The Ministry highlighted that many passengers often face confusion about food prices, which is exploited by some vendors who charge more than the fixed rates. To counter this, the Railway Ministry has taken the step to publicly inform passengers of the exact price and components of the meal.
If a vendor demands more money, fails to provide the full meal as mentioned, or serves less quantity than the standard 350 grams, passengers are encouraged to lodge a formal complaint.
How to Complain:
- Call the Rail Madad Helpline: Dial 139
- Post a complaint on the Railways’ official X handle
- Use the Rail Madad portal to report any misconduct
The Ministry reassures passengers that action will be taken swiftly to maintain service standards and accountability across stations and trains. This move comes amid rising complaints of overcharging and substandard food services.
The announcement has been well-received by travellers, especially those who frequently use Indian Railways for long-distance journeys. It is also expected to bring more consistency and hygiene to catering services across the network.
