Veteran Marathi Actor Dr. Vilas Ujawane Passes Away at 70
Mumbai, April 5 — Veteran Marathi actor Dr. Vilas Ujawane, celebrated for his powerful voice and outstanding performances across theatre, television, and cinema, passed away on Friday afternoon at the age of 70. He breathed his last at Om Hospital in Borivali, Mumbai. He is survived by his wife Anjali and son Kapil.
Born and raised in Nagpur, Dr. Ujawane began his journey in the performing arts during his college years, while pursuing a degree in Ayurveda (BAMS). Despite a strong academic background, his passion for theatre led him to become actively involved with local groups like Rangswanand. He participated in state-level drama competitions and children’s theatre, building a solid foundation in acting.
With aspirations to turn professional, he later moved to Pune and eventually to Mumbai, where his career flourished. He gained recognition for his commanding screen presence and became a familiar face in Marathi households through his work in plays, serials, and films. His role in the popular television series Vadalvat remains one of his most beloved performances.
In 2017, Dr. Ujawane suffered a brain stroke and later battled multiple health issues including heart disease and paralysis. Despite these challenges, he made a remarkable return to acting in 2022, exemplifying resilience and dedication to his craft.
Dr. Ujawane’s contribution to Marathi entertainment is considered invaluable. His legacy lives on through his work and the inspiration he offered to generations of aspiring artists.
