27-year-old tribal man’s death sparks outrage over alleged negligence at state-run hospital

A tragic incident unfolded at Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) on Monday when a 27-year-old man from the Katkari tribal community, Anil Waghmare, died after reportedly being left unattended for nearly two hours.

According to eyewitnesses, Waghmare was in severe pain and kept struggling on the hospital floor, but no medical staff came forward to provide immediate care. His mother, Vimal Hanumant Waghmare, said that doctors at a private clinic in Khadakwasla had earlier advised dialysis due to alcohol-related health complications, prompting the family to rush him to SGH.

“My son was in utter pain, and he died in front of me. It was so heart-wrenching to see him die without treatment,” she said.

Relatives alleged that the delay in medical attention highlights both negligence and the systemic apathy faced by the poor. “We sought timely treatment, but after waiting for two hours, he died even before being examined properly,” a family member added.

The incident has triggered widespread anger, with activists and local leaders demanding accountability and strict action against those responsible for the alleged negligence.
