Video: Worm Found in Pongal at Rameshwaram Cafe, Bengaluru Airport; Customer Alleges Cover-Up
Popular South Indian food chain faces fresh controversy after worm discovered in breakfast dish at Kempegowda International Airport.
A customer at the Kempegowda International Airport was shocked on Thursday morning after discovering a worm inside the pongal he was served at the Rameshwaram Cafe outlet located on the premises. The incident has sparked concerns over hygiene standards at the popular South Indian food chain.
According to the customer, when he brought the issue to the attention of the cafe staff, they allegedly attempted to downplay the matter. However, their response changed once he began recording the incident on his phone. In the video, the worm is clearly visible in a spoonful of pongal as he pans the camera across the restaurant. A staff member is also heard defensively questioning whether he had spoken “inappropriately.”
The customer claimed that only after capturing the video did the staff offer apologies and refund the ₹300 he had paid for the meal. He also discussed with another diner about raising the issue with the cafe’s owner via Instagram.
The cafe has not yet issued any official statement regarding the incident.
The Rameshwaram Cafe, a Bengaluru-based brand with multiple outlets across India, enjoys wide popularity among both residents and tourists for its traditional South Indian fare. However, this is not the first time its hygiene practices have come under scrutiny.
In May 2024, several outlets of the chain in Hyderabad were raided by the Food Safety Department of Telangana. Inspectors discovered large quantities of expired and mislabelled food items, including 100 kg of urad dal (expired in March), 10 kg of curd, and 8 litres of milk.
The current incident adds to growing concerns over food safety and quality control at even reputed eateries across India.
