Viral Golden Modak Priced at ₹20,000/kg Steals Ganesh Chaturthi Spotlight
Premium sweet infused with luxury becomes talk of Maharashtra festive season
Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 celebrations in Maharashtra have taken a lavish turn this year with a sweet shop in Nashik introducing a “golden modak” priced at ₹20,000 per kg. The extravagant sweet has created a buzz among devotees and sweet lovers alike, making it one of the most expensive festive offerings this season.
The shop claims to have gone beyond the traditional preparation, possibly incorporating edible gold or premium ingredients, while retaining the cultural essence of the beloved modak — considered Lord Ganesha’s favourite sweet. The unique blend of tradition and indulgence has already caught the eye of locals and visitors.
Modak and Ganeshotsav connection
Modak holds a special spiritual and cultural significance during Ganeshotsav, often offered as prasad to Lord Ganesha. Alongside modak, devotees also prepare and enjoy sweets such as pedhas, jalebis, shrikhand, amrakhand, kheer, gulab jamun, and basundi during the 10-day festival.
In Pune district alone, many Ganesh mandals distribute prasad to lakhs of devotees daily, ranging from sweets and milk products to fruits and coconuts.
FDA’s festive advisory
With the rush of festive purchases, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has urged devotees to remain mindful of food safety and hygiene. Key guidelines include:
- Consume only hygienically prepared prasad.
- Wash fruits before offering or eating.
- Check expiry dates and FSSAI certification on packaged foods.
- Avoid artificially coloured sweets.
- Prefer freshly prepared food.
- Take only as much prasad as you can consume; avoid wastage.
- Be alert about food allergies and check ingredients beforehand.
- Maintain cleanliness during festivities.
As Ganesh Chaturthi continues, Nashik’s golden modak has not only sparked curiosity but also symbolises how celebrations are evolving, blending traditional devotion with modern-day extravagance.
