Mumbai: A shocking video capturing a tragic accident on a Mumbai local train has gone viral, bringing renewed attention to the dangers faced by passengers on the city’s crowded rail network.

Incident Details:

The video was old, which has gone viral on social media, depicts a few passengers standing in a small space outside a door. Approximately four passengers are seen hanging onto the same door. As the crowded local train passes by, an express train, some passengers from the express train began recording the scene. In a tragic turn, one of the passengers hanging from the local train’s door, distracted by the recording, hit a pole and fell off. The train quickly sped away, leaving fellow passengers with no chance to help.

Railway Officials’ Response:

Central Railway’s Public Relations Officer confirmed that the incident occurred in 2022 on the Kalyan route of Central Railway. The injured passenger survived but suffered a leg fracture. Despite the video’s age, its resurfacing underscores ongoing safety challenges. Passengers from the adjacent Deccan Queen train captured the incident on their mobile phones.

The video highlights the precarious conditions Mumbai local train passengers endure daily, exacerbated by overcrowding, delays, and technical issues. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, there have been 565 recorded passenger deaths on Mumbai’s suburban railway lines, with 139 resulting from falls.
