Viral Video: Two Women Clash Over Kannada-Hindi Dispute in Bengaluru Metro
Viral video shows heated altercation over language choice, sparks online debate
A video of a verbal spat between two women at a Namma Metro station in Bengaluru has gone viral, reigniting discussions around the Kannada-Hindi language divide in the city.
According to reports, the confrontation began when one woman insisted on conversing in Kannada, while the other, dressed in a black burqa, refused and demanded that she speak in Hindi instead.
The video shows the Hindi-speaking woman retorting sharply: “Speak Hindi. Are you the Chief Minister? Get lost.” She then goes further, taunting her counterpart with the comment: “Are you Siddaramaiah’s woman?”
In response, the saree-clad Kannada speaker can be heard repeatedly asserting, “Kannada… Kannada,” refusing to switch languages. The argument, captured near the metro ticket counter, quickly escalated but did not appear to turn physical.
The clip has drawn divided reactions on social media. Some users condemned the hostility, saying such incidents highlight growing intolerance around language in Bengaluru. A Reddit user commented, “Every day there seems to be a fight over Kannada—why so much intolerance nowadays?” Others dismissed the outrage, with one X user remarking, “The situation is so confused that it doesn’t really warrant outrage or a hullabaloo from language warriors. Time and energy saved.”
The incident underscores the recurring friction between local language pride and linguistic diversity in Bengaluru, a city that has long been a melting pot of cultures and tongues.
