Virat Kohli Retirement Update: No Clarity Yet on ODI Future
Chief Selector unable to contact Kohli; reports suggest no decision made on retirement
Speculation around Virat Kohli’s future in ODI cricket continues to grow, with reports indicating that no discussions have yet taken place between the former captain and the BCCI. According to Revsports, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has been unable to establish proper contact with Kohli, leaving uncertainty over whether he will feature in India’s upcoming series against Australia.
Kohli, who retired earlier this year from both Test and T20I formats, has not played any competitive cricket since the end of IPL 2025. Fans were hopeful of his return in the three-match ODI series against Australia, beginning October 19, but so far, there has been no confirmation.
Reports had suggested that the team management wanted both Kohli and Rohit Sharma to get match practice by turning out for India A against Australia A in Kanpur. However, neither player was included in the recently announced squad. Like Kohli, Rohit has also retired from Tests and T20Is, and both last represented India in the Champions Trophy final in March.

Despite the speculation, Kohli has not made any public statement about retiring from ODIs. Both he and Rohit have reportedly cleared fitness tests, with pictures emerging of them practicing in the nets.
India’s tour of Australia will see the Men in Blue play three ODIs from October 19 to 25, followed by a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8. The BCCI has yet to announce the final squad, and Kohli’s inclusion or absence will likely settle the debate over his ODI future.
