Want To Treat 3 Minors Held For Brutal Assault As Adults: Pune Cops
Pune: Police are seeking the juvenile justice board’s approval to try the three minors involved in the fatal attack on morning walker Samir Roy Chowdhury (77) in Aundh as adults. Six youngsters, including the three minors, targeted Roy Chowdhury for money to buy liquor and attacked him with an iron rod around 5:15 am on Thursday. Roy Chowdhury succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Friday night.
Among the assailants, the third minor and the arrested adult, Jay Sunil Ghengat, had no prior criminal records. The police are still searching for one more minor and an adult accomplice involved in the case. A magisterial court has ordered Ghengat’s custodial remand until June 18, while Pune’s juvenile justice board has remanded the three minors (two aged 17 and one 16) to an observation home until June 28. Senior inspector Ajay Kulkarni of the Chatushrungi police stated, “We have filed an application before the JJB seeking its permission to try the three minors as adults.”
Additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil said, “We have demanded trial of these three minors as adults as their act constitutes as a heinous crime and serious offences. Their attack reflects brutality and premeditation. The six youngsters also attacked Shreyas Shetty (30), a quality assurance professional, and Ramsobit Kumar Mandal (38), a casual worker. They were hardly 100 meters away from Roy Chowdhury.
Shetty is the complainant in the case. The police have invoked charges under sections 397 (robbery or dacoity with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 307 (attempt to commit murder) of the IPC, among others. Inspector (Crime) Yuvraj Nandre of Chatushrungi police informed that a report has been submitted seeking Ghengat’s remand for seven days. Nandre further stated that the police now needs to recover the iron rod, autorickshaw, and bike which were used in the crime.
