Tempers flared on the streets of Pune when a shocking case of road rage ended with a school bus driver ramming into a pickup van, smashing its windshield, and hurling abuses at the other driver. The incident, which unfolded near the Magarpatta overbridge in Hadapsar, quickly made its way to social media after a video capturing the chaos went viral — prompting swift action from the Pune City Police.

The driver in question has been identified as Suraj Ramesh Patil, 32, a resident of Aniket Park in Shahu Nagar, Chinchwad. Authorities arrested him on Saturday and booked him under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: Section 281 (rash driving), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (assault), and 324(2) (causing hurt).

According to the police, the incident occurred around 3 PM on Thursday when Patil, who was allegedly driving the school bus recklessly, brushed against a pickup van. What started as a minor collision soon escalated into a heated altercation. In a burst of anger, Patil reportedly assaulted the pickup van driver, arrogantly challenged him to report the incident by stating, “Note my vehicle’s number and go to any police chowki… My name is Suraj Patil.” The situation worsened when Patil took a metal object and smashed the van’s windshield.

Upon receiving information about the altercation, a team from Hadapsar Police Station began a search operation and tracked Patil down to the Chinchwad area. In a public display meant to set an example, police paraded him on his knees at the location where the incident occurred and conducted a spot panchnama in full public view on Saturday.

In an effort to highlight the seriousness of the crime and their no-tolerance stance, the Hadapsar police also released a “before and after” video. The footage shows both the violent act and the aftermath — including Patil being paraded at the spot and issuing a public apology, promising not to repeat such behavior.

Fortunately, no children were on board the bus during the time of the incident, as Patil had reportedly gone to Shevalwadi in Hadapsar for vehicle servicing. Though the situation could have been much worse, it still sparked major concerns about public safety and the responsibilities of individuals behind the wheel of school vehicles.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajkumar Shinde confirmed that Patil has paid compensation to the pickup van driver for the damage caused.
