In a deeply tragic turn of events, a well-known snake rescuer from Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district lost his life after being bitten by a cobra he had just saved. The incident, which occurred earlier this week in the town of Raghogarh, has left locals mourning the loss of a man who dedicated his life to protecting people and reptiles alike — often at great personal risk, and never for money.
Deepak Mahabar, 42, was no stranger to snake rescues. For over a decade, he had been the go-to person in his community whenever a serpent entered homes, shops, or neighborhoods. Working informally with JP College, he was respected not only for his quick response but also for his courage and compassion. On Monday afternoon, he received yet another call—this time from Barbatpura, where a cobra had entered someone’s home.
Without hesitation, Deepak rushed to the site, safely captured the snake, and then realized it was time to pick up his son from school. In a decision that would prove fatal, he coiled the cobra around his neck and rode off on his motorcycle. A friend captured a short video of him seated on the bike with the snake draped around his shoulders—an image that has since gone viral across social media.
On his return trip home, somewhere between the school and his residence in Katra Mohalla, the snake bit him on the hand. Despite the danger, Deepak managed to call a friend for help. He was immediately taken to the local hospital in Raghogarh and then referred to the district hospital in Guna for more advanced treatment.
Initially, his condition seemed to improve. He even returned home later that evening, hopeful that he was recovering. But the relief was short-lived. As night fell, his health deteriorated rapidly. Around 4 a.m. the next morning, he passed away during treatment at the hospital.
His death has left a deep void not just in his family, but in the entire community. Known for his selfless service, Deepak never charged a single rupee for rescuing snakes. His dedication to saving both people and reptiles earned him widespread respect and affection.
Tragically, Deepak had recently intended to showcase the same cobra during the upcoming Shravan month procession by keeping it in a glass enclosure — a plan that will now never materialize. He is survived by his two young sons, Raunak (12) and Chirag (14), both of whom have been orphaned following the earlier loss of their mother.
A police investigation into the incident has been initiated, though officials have stated that it appears to be a tragic accident resulting from close and prolonged contact with a venomous snake. Deepak’s passing is not just the loss of a man, but of a quiet hero who served his community without expecting anything in return.
