Software developer’s humorous take on office culture sparks online debate about work-life differences between Europe and India

A Ranchi-based software developer, Dev Vijay Vargiya, has gone viral after sharing a video documenting his first day at work in Pune, India following his return from Sweden. Posted on Instagram with the caption, “First day back in Indian office after Sweden,” the clip has already garnered over one million views.

The video opens with his struggle to commute, what was once a 20-minute walk in Sweden stretched into an hour in India when his booked cab failed to show up.

He also compared the road conditions and highlighted how the roads were full of potholes with muddy water making it a struggle for pedestrians to navigate.

The video also shows sharp contrasts in workplace culture and daily routines. At his new office, the entry process reminded him of “airport security,” and he humorously recounted being sent in circles between IT, administration, and HR just to get Wi-Fi access.

Despite the struggles, Dev pointed out positives too. He praised the canteen food, calling Indian office lunches “the best,” and swapped his Swedish hot chocolate routine for a tea break with a friend. Reflecting on his experience, he said, “There is a struggle to adjust to the Indian work culture, but it is interesting as well. We will have to see what differences I face between the European work culture and the Indian one.”

The post drew a flood of reactions online. While some users asked, “Why did you come back?” others quipped, “Now you can see the difference between India and Sweden.” The video has since sparked a wider conversation about workplace culture, employee comforts, and the subtle differences between professional life in Europe and India.
