Water Cuts In Pune Likely To End Soon As Khadakwasla Dam Nears 50% Capacity After Heavy Rains
Pune, 28 May 2025: Pune residents may soon get relief from ongoing water cuts as the Khadakwasla Dam — the city’s primary source of drinking water — has reached nearly 50% of its storage capacity following days of intense rainfall across Pune district and nearby Ghat regions. As of Wednesday, the dam stood at 48.86% full, signalling a significant improvement and reducing the risk of a water crisis.
This year’s monsoon has arrived earlier than usual, with steady pre-monsoon showers beginning in May. These rains have rapidly replenished all four major reservoirs that supply water to Pune: Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar. The cumulative water storage across these dams has now reached 19.64% of their total capacity.
Here are the current levels:
- Khadakwasla Dam: 48.86%
- Panshet Dam: 17.78%
- Varasgaon Dam: 21.24%
- Temghar Dam: 3.88%
The rising levels offer a welcome respite to citizens who endured water cuts throughout April and early May due to low reservoir supplies. With substantial rainfall continuing in the Ghats — the catchment zones for these dams — officials are hopeful that the current restrictions can be lifted soon.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely but remain optimistic that the early and abundant rainfall will ensure sufficient water availability for the months ahead.
