Cyclonic Low Pressure Over Arabian Sea to Bring Heavy Rainfall From May 20–25.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather alert for Maharashtra on Tuesday, indicating that a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the east central Arabian Sea and off the Karnataka coast on Thursday, May 22. This system is expected to intensify, which will turn into cyclonic storm ‘Shakti’ and move northwards, bringing a spell of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to parts of Maharashtra between May 19 and May 25.
The region has been witnessing intense pre-monsoon showers over the past few days, with thunderstorms and gusty winds continuing to lash various areas. The IMD has warned of potential disruption due to severe weather conditions and advised residents to remain cautious.
District-Wise Weather Update:
- Sangli: The district is currently experiencing heavy rainfall with thunderstorms. The IMD has predicted moderate showers with thunder activity over the next 24 hours. Maximum temperature is expected to hover around 34°C, with wind speeds likely to reach 50–60 km/h.

- Solapur: Moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds is expected. Isolated pre-monsoon showers have already been recorded in some parts of the district. The maximum temperature may rise to 35°C during the forecast period.
- Kolhapur: The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall with lightning and thunder in Kolhapur district. Wind speeds are anticipated to reach up to 60 km/h. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be 30°C and 22°C respectively.
- Pune: Several parts of Pune district have already recorded 14.1 mm of rainfall on Monday. The weather has turned cooler, with temperatures dropping to around 33°C. Thunderstorms, strong winds, and the possibility of hailstorms have prompted the IMD to issue an Orange Alert for the district.
The widespread rain has brought much-needed relief from the heat, but it has also disrupted agricultural activities in many areas. Authorities urge citizens to take necessary precautions as unstable weather conditions are expected to persist over the coming days.
