Maharashtra: The state has been experiencing unseasonal rains for the past eight to ten days, and this pattern is expected to persist and even intensify until Friday, May 24. The areas most affected will be Marathwada and Vidarbha, with predictions of hailstorms in parts of Madhya Maharashtra, and increased heat and humidity in the Konkan region.

A tropical depression extends from North East Rajasthan to North Madhya Maharashtra, maintaining a constant intensity. Another depression runs from Marathwada to Tamil Nadu, crossing Karnataka, enhancing the unseasonal weather patterns. These meteorological phenomena have prompted the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue ‘Yellow Alerts’ for all districts in Vidarbha and Marathwada.

Yellow Alert Districts (next two days):

Jalgaon, Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Nagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Parbhani, Dharashiv, Beed, Latur, Hingoli.

The IMD has forecast strong winds (30-40 km/h) and heavy rain with thunder and lightning in these areas. Despite the decrease in maximum temperatures, heat and heatwaves continue to affect regions like Jalgaon, which recorded the highest state temperature of 43 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Impact on Different Regions

Marathwada and Vidarbha: Expected to receive the most unseasonal rain.

Madhya Maharashtra: Potential for hailstorms in some areas.

Konkan Region: Continued heat and humidity, with light showers likely in the afternoons.

Due to the unseasonal weather, maximum temperatures have dropped below 40 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state. However, daytime heat will remain, with rain anticipated in the afternoons and continuing heat at night.

Favorable Conditions for Monsoonal Winds

The IMD has also reported favorable conditions for the onset of monsoonal winds. These winds are expected to enter the South Andaman Sea, along with the Nicobar Islands and the Northwest Bay of Bengal, within the next 48 hours.

Monsoon Predictions:

  – A low-pressure area will form over the northwest Bay of Bengal on May 22.

  – This low-pressure area is expected to intensify by May 24.

These developments are favorable for the entry of seasonal monsoonal winds. If these conditions persist, the IMD predicts that the monsoonal winds could enter Kerala prematurely, signaling an early start to the monsoon season.

The state is set to experience continued unseasonal rains, particularly in Marathwada and Vidarbha, until May 24. Heat and humidity will persist in Konkan, with potential hailstorms in Madhya Maharashtra. Concurrently, favorable conditions for the onset of monsoonal winds bring hope for an early monsoon, which could offer relief from the current weather anomalies.
