Weather Update: India Experiences Warmest October Ever
October 2024 has been confirmed as the warmest October on record in India, surpassing the previous high of 1951. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Central India experienced the highest mean temperature, making it the warmest October on record. Northwest India, including Delhi-NCR, became the second warmest on record since 1901.
The unusual warmth has been attributed to the formation of four low-pressure systems, late withdrawal of summer monsoon, and absence of western disturbances during the month. The IMD predicts that the “above-normal” temperature phase will continue in many parts of the country during the first two weeks of November, followed by a gradual dip in temperature.
La Nina, a climate phenomenon associated with periodic cooling of ocean surface temperatures, has not yet developed. This uncertainty makes it challenging for the Met department to predict the nature of winter. However, if La Nina forms in November-December, there’s a possibility of a harsher winter ahead.
Regional temperature predictions for November indicate warmer days in northeast and east central India, and parts of northwest and Peninsular India. West central India and adjoining areas of northwest India and north peninsular India may experience normal to below-normal maximum temperatures. Most parts of the country, except some areas of northwest, may face above-normal minimum temperatures.
The IMD continues to monitor weather patterns and provide updates on temperature fluctuations. Citizens are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to cope with the changing weather conditions.
