Weather Update: Thunderstorm Brings 18.2 mm Rain To Pune On Dussehra Eve, Yellow Alert Issued Till October 13Â
Pune city experienced sudden heavy rainfall on the eve of the Dussehra festival, with the city recording 18.2 mm of rain between 7 pm and 8 pm on Friday, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The rainfall, which occurred over the span of just one hour, was attributed to the rapid development of a thunderstorm cloud in the southern part of the city, which then moved northward.
This unexpected rain caught many by surprise, especially roadside vendors selling marigold flowers and apta leaves for Dussehra, who scrambled to protect their goods from damage. Additionally, several areas experienced traffic congestion due to waterlogging, according to local officials.

After the monsoon began withdrawing from Maharashtra’s Nandurbar district on October 6, it was expected to recede from other regions of the state. However, the withdrawal has been delayed by the formation of a low-pressure system near the Maharashtra coast. This system has resulted in widespread rainfall across the state, and weather experts predict that the rains will continue for another two to three days.
A well-marked low-pressure system has developed over the east-central Arabian Sea, near the Maharashtra coast. As a result, the state is witnessing light to moderate rainfall. A yellow alert has been issued for many areas, including Pune district, and this alert will remain in effect until October 13, with rainfall expected to persist until October 15.
The IMD’s yellow alert serves as a precaution for potential weather disruptions, urging residents to be prepared for light to moderate showers across the district over the next few days.
