New Delhi, August 15, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, unveiled the ‘Sudarshan Chakra Mission’, a decade-long initiative aimed at creating an advanced defence shield to protect India’s strategic, civilian, and religious sites from potential enemy attacks.

Drawing inspiration from Lord Shri Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra, the mission seeks to develop an indigenous multi-layered security system integrating advanced surveillance, interception, and counter-attack capabilities across air, land, and sea. The ambitious project is being compared to Israel’s renowned Iron Dome, which boasts over 90% interception success against rockets from Hamas and Hezbollah.

Modi emphasised that all research, development, and manufacturing will be carried out in India, harnessing domestic talent to achieve self-reliance in defence technology. “By 2035, we aim to expand, strengthen, and modernise this national security shield to counter and neutralise any threats swiftly,” he said.

In a strong message to Pakistan, the Prime Minister lauded the armed forces for the success of Operation Sindoor, which he said had inflicted severe damage on the neighbouring country in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. Modi asserted that India will no longer tolerate “nuclear blackmail” and warned that terrorists and their supporters will be treated alike, with the military having full authority to decide retaliatory measures.

The Sudarshan Chakra Mission is expected to be one of India’s most significant defence projects in recent years, signalling a decisive step towards enhanced national security and indigenous innovation.
