No signal, no Wi-Fi, no problem. Google has introduced a feature in its upcoming Pixel 10 series that could change the way people communicate during emergencies and in remote areas. The new phones — Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold — will allow WhatsApp voice and video calls even without internet or mobile networks, thanks to satellite connectivity.
How It Works
Until now, satellite features on smartphones were mostly limited to emergency texts or location sharing. Google, in partnership with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Satellite platform, has expanded this to support WhatsApp calls directly through satellites. This means users will be able to make and receive audio and video calls in places where mobile towers or Wi-Fi are unavailable — from rural villages to mountains, deserts, and even disaster-hit zones.

When Will It Launch?
Google has announced that satellite-enabled WhatsApp calling will roll out on August 28, 2025. However, it will first be available only in select regions through partner network carriers. India is not on the initial rollout list, as satellite communication for public use still requires government approval. That said, BSNL has already hinted at working on satellite services, suggesting availability in India may follow once regulations are in place.

Apple made headlines earlier with satellite SOS texting, but Google has gone a step further by enabling full WhatsApp calling without relying on cellular or broadband networks. This leap means users can remain connected during critical times when traditional infrastructure fails.
